b2ap3_thumbnail_peace_live_at_twisted_frequency.jpgNo matter where in New Zealand you have been in the last few years, you will have probably heard at least a whisper of hip-hop collective @Peace. Hailing from Auckland, the group is making a name for themselves in national and international circles. Moving away from the bravado and violence of commercial hip-hop, @Peace uses powerful narratives with jazz inspired soundscapes as a platform to discuss philosophical ideas pertinent to modern society.

The collective is currently on a New Zealand wide tour promoting their new concept album '@Peace and The Plutonian Noise Symphony'. This album has been met with increasing support both in New Zealand and Europe, entering the charts at #3, with CD and Vinyl pre-orders selling out. They were also recently nominated for the Best Group category at this years NZ Music Awards. Plutonian Noise Symphony is also currently in the running for “Best urban hip hop album 2014” it is a follow-up to their last two E.P's, the self-titled @Peace (2012) and 'Girl Talk' (2013). The 5-piece is made up of a selection of talented kiwi musicians including Tom Scott and Lui Tuisasau of famous Kiwi hip hop crew: Home Brew. The psychedelic musical atmosphere is then created and produced by Christof El Truento, Hayden Dicky and Brandon Haru.

@Peace and associates from the Young, Gifted and Broke collective have a well-documented reputation of speaking out on issues that are critical of New Zealand's political sphere. Earlier this year the group made headlines with their politically charged single 'Kill the Prime Minister', an impassioned expression of disappointment at the actions of John Key and his government. The song was met with censorship and disdain from the media, but also garnered support from the masses of impoverished youth in New Zealand, many of whom related to the oppression expressed in the lyrics.

Do not however make the mistake of thinking that @Peace's lyrics are merely a collection of political rants expressing violence towards public figures. They are so much more than that. This is particularly evident in Plutonian Noise Symphony, an album which tackles massive philosophical ideas on topics such as A.I. and 'outer worldly territories', all the while holding onto an over-riding expression of cosmic nihilism. They make a conscious effort to cover topics which are not often discussed in mainstream or even underground hip-hop, musing from Greek philosophers, quantum theory, death and the cosmos itself.

@Peace are part of the New Zealand artist collective Young, Gifted and Broke, which is a ground up movement of 'artists too broke to pay the rent and too proud to sell out'. Representing several of NZ's best, brightest and brokest musicians, artists and producers, YGB hold true to the ethos of dedication despite economic adversity. The label represents crowd favourites Home Brew, Tourettes, Team Dynamite, Third3ye and Louis Knuxx.

Upon the conclusion of their current tour, and the beginning of the summer circuit, @Peace have announced their headlining spot at this years Twisted Frequency New Years Festival. Playing alongside a variety of artists, including other members of the YGB collective Raiza Biza and Third3ye, @Peace are set to send minds into space and the dancefloor into a groove.

Other headliners for the festival include kiwi post-rock band Jakob, UK producer WagaWaga, Melbournes Trip Hop duo The Wednesday Experiment, and experimental Drum and Bass producer Dusty Fungus. They are also joined by a myriad of local and international artists ready to knock your socks off.

Cannan Downs

New Zealand. Land of the long white cloud, half ya mates and the most talked about party of the season: Twisted Frequency.

This is a New Years festival like no other; a uniquely kiwi experience, bringing doof culture, live music and community together in a way only New Zealanders can. Come along to four days of music, art, performance and camping in the lush kiwi forest, and be prepared to stomp your little heart out!

Featuring a wide array of genres from Prog, Psy, Techno, House, Glitch, and Mid-Tempo to Hip-Hop, Dub, Psychedelic Rock, Metal and Funk, Twisted Frequency has something for anyone and everyone, a true gathering of the tribes.

Last year's event saw over 100 artists from NZ, Australia and beyond, come together under one sun, and bring in the new year with style. The addition of the live music stage to the doof format brings a welcome expansion to the scene, encouraging live jams, collaborations between artists and some squelching good times.

2014 is set to be even bigger and even better.

The smashing first line-up announcement features just a sliver of the amazing artists to be showcased at this year's event. WagaWaga, Dusty Fungus, Xsetra, Grouch, Whitebear, Tom Cosm and many more are set to take over the E-zone, while the live stage sees the talents of Soulware, The Wednesday Experiment and the Melting Faces ready to... well... melt your faces. Be prepared for A LOT of sound!

Several days of music, nature and friends aren't enough for you? Fret not. Your senses will be delighted by stunning live art and installations. Your interest will be piqued by roving circus performers, nightly fire shows and all things weird and wacky in between. Your mind and soul will be opened in the workshop space and circo arts space, with hands on symposiums, skill shares and tutorials for all levels. [1]And your body will be nourished in the market space with organic food and drink, as well as local wares.

When talking about New Zealand and its natural places, one age old question is askd. The answer is yes, this site was featured in Lord of the Rings.

Set in a magical stomping ground amongst the clouds, Canaan Downs is one of the most formidable and well established festival sites in Aotearoa. Here lies a quartz mountain covered in ancient beech forest, and attached to one of the most famous National Parks in the country. Canaan Downs holds great historical significance to the kiwi outdoor party scene, with some of New Zealand's most well known events being held on the site. This sturdy history of music and community is set to be continued with this summer's addition of Twisted Frequency. A portion of ticket sales goes to the Canaan Downs Collective that own and manage the land. This visionary model looks to the long-term, low impact and sustainable management of the land, keeping it accessible for the wider community to enjoy. Along with this collective, the Twisted crew undertake tree plantings to aid in forest restoration and provide sanctuary for at-risk native species.

Twisted is the creation of a collective of outdoor party crews from across Aotearoa, with the intention to promote local artists. A colossal conglomerate of Kiwi Bass crews have joined forces for this event, creating the Frankenstein's monster of New Years parties. The word has spread, and has garnered increasing involvement and support from the family in the Australian scene. Originating in underground psy-stomps, this collective are looking to the future, aiming to act as a vanguard to herald larger scale electronic parties to their corner of the world.

Keen to be involved? Applications for artists, performers, market stall holders and volunteers are now open.

This is going to be the party of the year.

See ya there.
